300 seedlings

23 pupils of class 4a from the primary school Hessisch Lichtenau took part in the Squirrel Forest Campaign during their stay at the Forest Youth Hostel. They collected wildlings from the waysides and planted over 300 beech, sycamore and Norway maple seedlings on a bare windthrow site.

Philipp Vogl and his friend Tobias Ackermann had a particularly good time with the Squirrel Forest Campaign. It was Philipp’s 10th birthday and together they planted 30 birthday seedlings. During the break everyone enjoyed a hearty forest breakfast prepared by mother, SandraVogl. Doris Goebel, the class teacher, was also very pleased with the project. “At last the children can really let off steam out in the countryside and at the same time plant a new Meißner Forest.”

Collecting wildlings

Wildlings are very young tree seedlings from the previous year’s tree seeds. If you are careful, it’s not difficult to dig or pull them up from where they are growing on the slopes at the sides of the paths. Forester Lothar Freund and his active supporters will be repeating this project six times in the coming weeks with about 150 children (visitors to the Forest Youth Hostel). They will have planted up to 1800 wildlings! 5 classes from schools in Eschwege and one from Frankfurt/Main will be taking part.
