Squirrel Forest Campaign at “Ziegenland” Farm
Campaign guide Jörg Busch together with teachers and pupils of classes E1,E2 and E3 from Jübek primary school and the proprietors of the organic farm “Ziegenland” (Goat Land) organized a veritable Squirrel Forest Campaign event! Here is his report:
Hardworking gatherers
We carried out our Squirrel Forest Campaign event on the 28.10. and the 03.11. The 80 pupils from Jübek primary school and their teachers Frau Korus, Frau Ziska-Kugler and Frau Kaiser had already been very busy collecting beech nuts and acorns in big containers at school – altogether a grand total of 17500 beech nuts and 6500 acorns!
Forest Seeding and 1300 goats
At 8.30 a.m. everyone met up at the old security point of a former machinery depot, half of which has been converted into the organic farm “Ziegenland” by its new owners Ulf Clausen and Peter Stuckert. In the barns which have been adapted from former warehouses about 1300 goats are kept, of which about 500 are milked every day. Thanks to the support of both farmers the 9 hectares of land have already hosted various environmental events for children, offering school classes and kindergarten groups lots of fun. Using machinery to loosen up the soil of the old Wachweg Ulf Clausen had already prepared the ground. This meant we had little difficulty putting in the tree seeds and only needed to cover up the grooves again – easily done with our feet.
High spirits despite the awful weather
Unfortunately the weather let us down on both days, so we were glad when we had finished the planting in the rain and could enjoy our own picnics in the straw in the goat barn. At the same time we were allowed to stroke the goats and feed them with hay – something everyone enjoyed. All in all we were in good spirits and the event was great fun!
